Mental health rehabilitation services - not to be confused with drug or alcohol rehab - exist to help people with severe and enduring mental illness to live more independently. Often the people referred to them have psychosis and may have been in another inpatient unit before being sent for rehabilitation.
Many rehabilitation patients are sent for treatment outside the area where they live. This can make it harder to keep in touch with home, friends and family. It can also weaken the link with community services and mean that people stay in hospital for longer.
Our In Sight In Mind campaign, with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, is calling for an end to inappropriate out of area rehabilitation placements in services and for investment in local services instead.
